Asterisk 1.4 is the latest version of our favoured Open Source PBX released from Digium . Even though the version number is listed at 1.4 it should have been a 2.0 release. There are so many changes and focus that giving it a 2.0 version would have been a better decision. And to be honest it should have not been released yet because the most important feature of 1.4 release really isn't ready.

The most exciting feature is the ability to use the new gui interface from a browser. This feature looks cool but it still in beta and actually doesn't work all that great compared to FreePBX. It is however easier to configure than FreePBX. There is no MySQL and http server required. Asterisk 1.4 uses its own internal web server.

The installation process hasn't changed much. There is an additional ./configure step before doing a make to compile from sources but it's nothing  major. My test installation was done using CentOS 4.4 in a virtual machine using VMware 1.0.1 on Ubuntu 6.10. I will post some screen captures and additional technical details as soon I get a chance.

At this point it looks like what Digium is trying to do is put out their own Trixbox style distribution called AsteriskNow. Unlike Trixbox AsteriskNow is tailrored for lower hardware requirements. This distribution uses the 1.4 release as a base plus the gui interface. In any case lots of exciting stuff coming out of Digium.
