it's been almost 3 years since I got involved in this wonderful world of VoIP. Like many I discovered Asterisk and saw all this great potential. Immediately I wanted to get involved in learning everything I could about Asterisk. Looking back that seemed way too optimistic. I have learned a great deal but feel that I have even more to learn.

One of the projects I started to help me learn Asterisk and VoIP technology was SimplePBX. While learning Asterisk I discovered that my configurations files had a constant pattern. Rather than changing all these configs it was much easier to write a simple program to do that. I knew about FreePBX and saw that it had all kinds of great features but I just wanted to understand how I could implement them.

It didn't take very long for me to have a working dial plan and it looked like it wouldn't take much to add more features. I seriously under estimated the time it takes to implement and test new features. You also have the rapid release of Asterisk to keep up with. I just couldn't keep up and really lost interest in application development.

As my knowledge of Asterisk increased I found it much easier to deploy FreePBX solutions than enhancing SimplePBX. Plus providing working business solutions to clients pays much better. FreePBX and Asterisk are not perfect but it became easier to sell Asterisk based systems with those components. I somehow bridged the gap where VoIP was something different than networking. To me VoIP is just another aspect of networking

In the last couple of years I have found myself doing more Asterisk installations and repairing bad trixbox installs. What I have discovered is that as a job I can easily install and maintain Asterisk based systems very well. Much more than I can develope an open source application. It was a good learning experience but I can no longer give the impression that SimplePBX is actively developed. The source code is available and will remain available on sourceforge. Anyone wishing to take over the project may do so.

I will be changing the main introduction to the site and try to focus more of what I am actually doing with Asterisk and FreePBX. I will be adding Voip Consulting and Training to the site. This will be mainly for potential clients in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). I don't have any history of training but I do spend a great deal of time trying to explain what VoIP is and how it can solve business problems. I've had numerous people ask me to teach them basic installation of Asterisk and so I will provide this as a service for anyone interested.
