Asterisk 1.4 Review (Now with Pics!)

Asterisk 1.4 is the latest version of our favoured Open Source PBX released from Digium . Even though the version number is listed at 1.4 it should have been a 2.0 release. There are so many changes and focus that giving it a 2.0 version would have been a better decision. And to be honest it should have not been released yet because the most important feature of 1.4 release really isn't ready.

The most exciting feature is the ability to use the new gui interface from a browser. This feature looks cool but it still in beta and actually doesn't work all that great compared to FreePBX. It is however easier to configure than FreePBX. There is no MySQL and http server required. Asterisk 1.4 uses its own internal web server.

In developing SimplePBX and learning about Asterisk I've had to obtain certain pieces of software and hardware. My main development computer at this point is a Dell Latitude D600 1.6Ghz with 512MB memory and 80G hard drive. I have installed Ubuntu 6.10 and for the most part all the features are working. I've replaced the wireless card from 1350 down to an 1150 which Ubuntu seems to like.

For testing Asterisk in different environments I have installed VMware Server 1.0.1 for Linux. This is not an open source package but its free and works really well. Yes Asterisk does work in Virtual system like VMWare but there are plenty of problems that you may need to resolve.  For actual coding I am using the Debian packages for Freepascal .

The DI-102 is referred to as a VOIP accelerator. It's a small piece of hardware from D-LINK that provides QoS for your network. It sits between your cable/dsl modem and router. There is an administration page that you can adjust a few setting but overall the device works automatically. The most amazing part of this is that it actually works. If you are having problems with your VOIP provider install one of these devices. Here are some pictures of what the device looks like.

Hi Everyone! Even though phpBB is a great piece of Forum software it wasn't the best thing to see as the front page of a website. I have installed Joomla and will be adding more content to the site. If you have any interesting links please submit them. The Forum is still there and can be reached by clicking on the Forum button on the side or top. The Download button will link you to Sourceforge.net where you can download SimplePBX.

Even though SimplePBX is strictly an Open Source project I have no problems posting links to commercial sites with VOIP related products that can be used with SimplePBX.
